Tips and Tricks

Secrets to a Flawless Complexion

1. Wash your face every night before bed (wipes don’t count!)

Like our body, our skin repairs itself at night, so be sure to remove the day’s debris – dirt, makeup, oil, pollution, etc. – from your skin before laying your head on that pillow at night! Wipes do not thoroughly clean your skin and cannot be relied on to cleanse the skin.

2. Change your pillowcase on the REGULAR!

Keep that pillowcase fresh and clean to avoid breakouts! You could even purchase a silk pillowcase or one that has anti-bacterial properties to help you in your quest for clearer skin.

3. Less is not best; more is not better.

Whether you are over-exfoliating, over washing or under hydrating, be kind to your skin. There is no need to wash your face more than twice a day no matter what your skin type – morning and night – you are all set!

Be sure you are hydrating your skin based on the current condition of your skin. You may have had oily skin 10 years ago – but what kind of skin do you have now? Be sure to hydrate oily skin to help keep skin healthy as well as to control oil production. Your skin wants a balance between oil and water – it can produce oil but not water, so it needs that moisturiser! If you are unsure what kind of skin you have – consult a professional!

4. Exfoliate the RIGHT way.

We all love the way our skin feels after a good exfoliation, but over-exfoliation can be a serious problem that can cause overly dry, flaking skin. If you are using harsh ingredients (e.g., fractured nutshells, etc.), you can cause superficial tears in the skin which are not visible, but they allow your skin to haemorrhage water, leaving it dehydrated, red and irritated. Use a chemical exfoliant (AHA’s, BHA’s, enzyme’s, etc.) to reveal fresh, smooth skin that is ready and able to accept and best use your serum of choice.

5. Achieve your skincare goals – don’t skip the serum.

The use of a serum helps you to achieve your skincare goals faster and more effectively. Whether you are fighting acne or wrinkles or anything in between – the serum you choose will have powerful active ingredients that will help you reach your goals of beautiful skin faster than any other product you put on your skin!

6. Make sure your products are reaching your skin.

Are you applying your products in the correct order?

Be sure to apply all products thinnest to thickest. This means the thinnest, lightweight serums should be applied to the skin first, and thicker creams, moisturisers and sunscreens should be your subsequent layers. The only exception to this rule is if you are using a facial oil; this should be your last and final step to act as a shield for your skin and a way to lock in your previous layers of hydration. You can either tap this oil on or mix facial oil with your moisturiser to boost hydration.

7. Wear sunscreen EVERYDAY – rain or shine.

The number one anti-ageing tool in your tool kit is sun protection.

We love the sun, but it can damage our skin DNA and can even lead to cancer. Wearing SPF daily – with no exception, whether it is summer or winter, will help to protect your skin from damage. Reapplication of sunscreen throughout the course of the day will ensure your SPF’s efficacy. If you are out in the sun, the golden rule of SPF is to reapply every 80 minutes.

8. Avoid the Big 3….

Soap: Whether it is a bar or liquid soap – avoid using it on your face. Soap is too harsh for our delicate facial skin because it strips the skin of essential moisture and disrupts the delicate pH of the skin. Even soap that claims to be “gentle” or “hydrating” is too harsh for the face.

Mineral Oil: This is a petroleum byproduct that feels thick and rich but has no hydrating properties and is occlusive, meaning it blocks the absorption of moisture/hydration by the skin

Alcohol: This specifically means SD alcohol, denatured alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol. These alcohols dry the skin and disrupt the natural hydration of the skin. There are “fatty alcohols” that are used as emulsifiers and are non-irritating to the skin. The “good” alcohols are cetyl, stearyl and cetearyl.

9. Receive regular cosmeceutical treatments by a qualified aesthetician.

A trained professional will conduct a thorough consultation and analysis of your skin to determine the most appropriate course of treatment specific to your skincare goals. They have also been trained to recommend the most effective and appropriate home care to aid in achieving those goals through consistent daily rituals.

10. Consistency is the key to success: The Daily “CTM.”

The key to healthy, beautiful skin is simple: Cleanse, Treat and Moisturise with SPF.

Eat right, give your body the fuel it needs to be its healthiest, sweat a little every day and be consistent with your skincare routine. There are no shortcuts, but it is easy if you include CTM in your everyday ritual!
